The
Honor Legion of the Fire Department of the City of New York
consists of members who have been cited by the Board
of Merit for having performed deeds of valor at imenent risk of life or who have been commended for meritorious acts of personal bravery for which they have been awarded a Class I, II or Class III entitling them to wear the prescribed insignia. Honorary membership may be conferred upon one who is of good moral character and who, in serving the Fire Department of the City of New York has merited and proven him or herself worthy of the gratitude and recognition of these two organizations.
The Honor Legion started as an idea in the quarters of
Engine 96 and Ladder 54 in 1983. With the assistance of the New York City Police Department's Honor
Legion, and the New York City Transit Police Department's Honor
Legion, the Fire Department Honor Legion of the City of New York was formed.
The purpose of The Honor Legion is to advance and promote the best interests of the Fire Department, encourage and provide social gatherings, foster a fraternal spirit, unite in a common bond of friendship, encourage support and assistance for all distressed worthy Firefighters or others deemed eligible to recieve it.
The Honor Legion of the Fire Department has dedicated themselves to the families of members who have died in the line of duty saving lives and or protecting the property of the citizens of The City of New York. During the year the families meet at Honor Legion functions. This provides a safe and supportive atmosphere where they can gather and speak with other families in the same sitiation as themselves and learn means of coping with their lives after the loss of their loved one. This endeavor has proved successful.
The Honor Legion works with the Fire Department Administration, the Counseling Unit and the Unions, to assist the families at the time of death and thereafter. The liason to the widow is Louise O'Connor (widow of Probationary Firefighter Bill O'Connor) who lost his life in the Waldbaum's Fire 1978.
The support the Honor Legion recieves from everyone is important as it enables the organization to assist the true "Bravest of the Bravest" the families of our deceased Firefighters and Fire Officers.
MAY
THE FAMILIES OF OUR BRAVE HEROES NEVER BE FORGOTTEN
